Direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow over a backward-facing step

چکیده
h = 9000. The discretisation is performed using a spanwise periodic spectral/hp element method. The inlet flow has turbulent velocity and pressure fields that are formed by a regenerating channel segment upstream of the inlet. Time and spanwise averages show secondary and tertiary corner eddies in addition to the primary recirculation bubble, while streamlines show a small eddy forming at the downstream tip of the secondary corner eddy. This eddy has the same circulation direction as the secondary vortex. Analysis of three-dimensional time-averages shows a wavy spanwise structure that leads to spanwise variations of the mean reattachment location. The visualisation of spanwise averaged pressure fluctuations and streamwise velocity shows that the interaction of vortices with the recirculation bubble is responsible for the flapping of the reattachment position, which has a characteristic frequency of St = 0.078.

LES/FMDF of premixed methane/air flow in a backward-facing step combustor
In the present study, a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology is utilized for large eddy simulation (LES) of premixed fuel/air flow over a three-dimensional backward facing step (BFS). The fluid dynamic features are obtained by solving the Eulerian filtered compressible transport equations while the species are predicted by using the filtered mass density function method (FMDF). Some scalar f...

متن کاملDirect numerical simulation of compressible flow over a backward-facing step
In this paper, we perform a direct numerical simulation study to investigative the effect of compressibility on the flow over a backward-facing step. A spectral multidomain method is used for simulating the compressible flow at Reynolds number of 3000 over an open backward-facing step. The role of compressibility in the sub-sonic regime is studied by simulating the flow at different free-stream...

In this study, three-dimensional simulations are presented for laminar forced convection flow of a radiating gas over a backward-facing step in rectangular duct. The fluid is treated as a gray, absorbing, emitting and scattering medium. The three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system is used to solve the governing equations which are conservations of mass, momentum and energy. These equations...

A numerical investigation of entropy generation in laminar forced convection of gas flow over a backward facing step in a horizontal duct under bleeding condition is presented. For calculation of entropy generation from the second law of thermodynamics in a forced convection flow, the velocity and temperature distributions are primary needed. For this purpose, the three-dimensional Cartesian co...
متن کاملDirect Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows Using Spectral Method
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is the most accurate method of solving turbulence in fluids. In DNS the Navier-Stokes equations are solved on a fine mesh to resolve all the spatial and temporal scales present in the flow. In order to ensure high accuracy of the discrete solution, schemes with low numerical errors are necessary. Spectral methods with their low dissipation and dispersion errors...
